The Brunels, father Marc Isambard and son Isambard Kingdom, greatly influenced the development of transport, whether on the roads, the high seas or the railways, often dealing with the interfaces between the modes, e.g., Isambard’s swing bridge in Bristol’s harbour and Marc’s tunnel under the Thames. In the Black Country, the Brunels’ influence was of note in the track gauge of the Great Western lines to Birmingham and beyond and the design of Wolverhampton Low Level.
Felix Schmid, Prof emeritus in Railway Systems Engineering at the University of Birmingham has researched both father and son and will trace their history as expressed in major engineering achievements!”
